Thanks again for subscribing to the DocWorkers newsletter!

This month, we're focusing on one of our favorite subjects – FOOD. If you're American like me, you grew up yearning for certain foods like they were drugs; McDonalds was a red and yellow, clown-happy romp in greasy, salty fat, and you and I loved it! We loved the Hamburgler, Mayor McCheese and all the happy characters that hawked that artery-clogging crap. And, we dragged our parents there to buy us Happy Meals and dairy-free "shakes". Even my own tofu-cooking, Bran-Buds-and-skim-milk-serving mother would occasionally take my sister and me there, probably just to shut us up.

Ironically, at the same time, our mothers were worrying about weight – theirs and ours -- and stocking our fridges with Tab and Fresca. These "diet" sodas were of course first sweetened with the carcinogen Saccharine, and later, NutraSweet...

It's only years later that we're starting to comprehend the toll these "foods" and the corporations behind them have taken on us. Franny Armstrong's McLibel sheds light on McDonalds Corp's sickening food, its conscious campaign to market to children, its horrendous mistreatment of animals, its raping of the rainforest, and of course, its campaign to silence all critics. It follows the world famous UK McLibel trial – the 15-year fight by two regular folks who defended themselves against 19 million dollars worth of McDonalds attorneys. I won't tell you who won. I will tell you that it's not only a great film, it's really a phenomenal DVD, packed with terrific extras. It's this month's Editor's Pick.

Back to the Tab and Fresca. Cori Brackett's Sweet Misery is simply required viewing. Listen, do you, or does anyone you know, drink diet soda? Feed low-sugar yogurt to your toddler? Eat or drink "diet" anything!? Well, put down that can! This film explores the frightening health risks posed by aspartame (A.K.A. Equal or Nutrasweet), and the astounding corruption behind its approval by the FDA. And guess what current Secretary of Defense was at the center of much of the controversy, as then-CEO of Searle Pharmaceuticals!?

Keeping our food theme going, there's The Future of Food 2 Disc Special Edition, by Deborah Koons Garcia (wife of the late Jerry Garcia). This film has played in theatres all over the world, and for good reason. It reveals the dangers of a genetically-modified food supply, and the outrageous bully tactics employed by agri-biz giant, Monsanto. It, too, has lots of great DVD extras.

And now, the special offer, just for you, newsletter subscribers:
