Dear friends,
Whew – been a busy month! So busy, that July's newsletter has become an August
one. But it's worth the wait! I've got some exciting news and, as usual, a
special discount for newsletter subscribers.
In my grandfather's spirit, here's dessert first:
The Big Buy: Tom DeLay's Stolen Congress, by Mark Birnbaum and Jim
Schirmbeck, is a wonderfully crafted look at the conniving by Tom DeLay to
create a Congressional majority by screwing with Texas state politics, and at
prosecutor Ronnie Earle's quest for DeLay's conviction. It's a fantastic insight
into the ethically-challenged back room machinations that define neo-con power
politics.

I oversaw the 18-city theatrical distribution of The Big Buy, and now
I'm running the theatrical on two more great films that will be in theatres
soon. The first is the 2006 Sundance winner for Best Documentary, American
Blackout, by Guerilla News Network's Ian Inaba. It uncovers the smarmy
tactics employed by strategists on the Right to systematically disenfranchise
Black voters in Florida in '00, Georgia in '02, and Ohio in '04., and follows
Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney's journey in particular. It opens in Atlanta this
Friday, and widens a few weeks later.
After that, comes the next incendiary doc from the tireless Robert Greenwald,
called Iraq For Sale: The War Profiteers, which opens in NY and LA on
Sept.. 8, and widens thereafter. Iraq For Sale blows the lid off of the
brash theft and jaw-dropping negligence committed by private contracting
companies like Halliburton and Blackwater, and the plight of American families
who suffer as a result of those companies' shirked responsibilities.
Keep an eye out for these films in your local arthouse theatres!
As always, thanks for your letters, suggestions, and support. Keep'em coming!
